Fighting Hunger in District 196, Two Generations at a Time
Last year, I had the privilege to participate in an event at The Sheridan Story, lending a hand to pack school supplies and food for children and their families in Minnesota schools.
I also took this opportunity to bring my children. My husband and I are fortunate enough to ensure that our children don’t have to worry about where they will be sleeping at night and where their next meal will come from. It is important for us that our children know that not everyone is as fortunate as we are. Their own friends might be facing food insecurity.
As we drove up to the warehouse my son saw a sign that said “Fight Hunger”. He innocently asked, “Mommy are we going to help fight hunger?” When I told him yes we are, his face lit up and he ran to the warehouse ready to do his part. At the age of six he didn’t fully understand that the cans of food he placed in countless bags fed more than 500 families, but he knew he had a lot of fun and that he helped to fight hunger.
Students in our school district come to school eager to learn and make friends, but for some of them, school lunch might be the only meal they can count on all day. Last year, through generous donations, we were able to raise $32,580 to provide weekend meals to over 480 students and their families in our district. The District 196 Foundation is committed to eliminating barriers to learning for all students in our school district. Kids cannot learn if they are hungry, this year we have set a goal of raising $100,000 to provide weekend meals to all students and their families in need. Please consider donating.
